This madness must stop. Those who use photography because they're carrying a 'smart' phone need to stop this deplorable practice before our children learn to record the world in a narrow perspective that is sandwiched between useless black spaces. Also, while reading the bitch about photography below, please acknowledge the average of 1.5 tablespoons of microplastics that are embedded in every American's brain; look it up. Because we're becoming stupider.
Please, young TikTokers, we owe it to the future to leave them videography that they will not be embarrassed by.
Please turn the damn camera correctly because we don't care what top you chose to wear today, or what the ceiling in your home looks like, or what the clouds or the ground were doing that day. The world as we see it horizontally is the context that surrounds us.
Our eyes are letterbox. One reason we see the world horizontally is our evolution and our adaptation to gravity, which has produced eye sockets that are wider than their height. This is also because all things and beings we interact with are situated around us on a flat plane (the ground or floor), and all of that content is best viewed horizontally. We can not ignore the contexts left and right of us. Ceilings, clouds, shirts, and pants are not context.
What about crime? Consider, somewhere right now, somebody with a smartphone capable of making great movies, if held correctly, will shoot a crime in progress while holding the phone vertically. Many witnesses, left and right of the crime, will never appear in the video, who could also identify the culprit, some with personal knowledge of the motive and methods, making it more difficult to catch the criminal. However, in most cases, the type of ceiling tile, the clarity of the sky and clouds, or how bright the stars were under which the crime occurred, are less relevant to capturing the criminals.
And holding your camera differently than professionals would does not make you more special or unique, either, if that's your motive.
