I just listened to a propane delivery man complaining about having fallen down a few times on slippery surfaces that were not de-iced or snow-cleared at the homes they deliver to. I quickly asked him if he was wearing cleats, he was not. We were each standing on a hillside in 20" of snow, next to the propane tank. I had a cane for added stability, and he had his confidence in his balance.
I felt I had to tell him of my adventures in construction in the snow as a plumber, not even delivering life-saving heating energy to old people who live alone and can't shovel a 100' walkway over a lawn and down a hillside, where those tanks are traditionally kept, not conveniently out front; the trucks have 150-foot hoses because of these distant locations from the street or from a driveway. This guy had been a U.S. Marine in the late eighties; now, he's just a pussy who makes complaints about what had been normalcy.
His concern should be the methane his lungs and blood are assaulted with every time he makes a delivery. I see no breathers on these delivery people. In that gas is benzene, a known carcinogen, far more hazardous than drudging through snow while more slowly lifting each knee to move forward, hauling that heavy hose.
There is another current factor in play. The USA has been in a shortage of labor (in difficult/laborious jobs) for several years. In this time of shortage of those willing to stay at tough jobs, employees like him are realizing they are no longer grateful to be working at the uncomfortable, hourly-paid position, but their employer is privileged to have them. The table has turned, and the paper tigers are revealed on the other side. Laborers get pussified and start wearing bandages over their calluses and complaining about mishaps that are the fault of their own carelessness, in a job where being careful around danger is part of the description. Men are no longer manly, they're china dolls in big stinky shoes. I found that former Marine to be embarrassing to all good American labor.
